Acording to the Travel Industry Association of America and Travel South USA the State of Georgia ranks as the 12th most popular destination for overseas visitors. In the year 2000 the number of visitors grew by 32% to an estimated 805,216 international visitors. These international visitors spend an average of 19 nights in the U. S. and over $3,800 per person per visit. For Georgia that's a great economic impact and thus a very important market segment. As the gateway to the South we are in an excellent position to further develop this business and provide greater economic benefit tour communities throughout Georgia. The Georgia Department of Economic Development aggressively markets the Georgia tourism product to many international markets through the efforts of our staff and consultants. GDEcD operates tourism offices in the United Kingdom and Germany. Through a cooperative effort with Travel South USA tourism offices are also operated in Japan and Brazil. The tourism division also works with GDEcD's trade representatives in other parts of the world to promote Georgia as a tourism destination.
